Course Overview

The Information Management Practitioner Level II (IMP II) is the advanced practitioner certification of the Institute of Information Management (IIM) Professional Global Network. It develops the deep specialist competencies that distinguish the experienced information management professional: designing sophisticated information architectures, governing digital preservation programmes, leading data governance initiatives, and operating at the intersection of information management and enterprise analytics.

Where the IMP I practitioner learns to design and implement governance frameworks, the IMP II practitioner governs complex, multi-system information environments: developing ontologies and advanced taxonomies aligned to ISO 25964, designing digital preservation programmes using the OAIS Reference Model (ISO 14721), governing Master Data Management programmes, applying data lineage governance to analytical platforms, and leading knowledge management strategy across the enterprise.

This programme is aligned to the DAMA-DMBOK2 data management framework, ISO 25964 thesaurus standards, ISO 14721 OAIS digital preservation model, and ISO 30401:2018 knowledge management requirements, with case studies drawn from complex organisational environments across African and international contexts.

Upon successful completion, candidates are recognised as Information Management Practitioners Level II by the Institute of Information Management (IIM) and are eligible for the PMIIM (Professional Member) membership grade.

 

Learning Objectives

By the end of this certification programme, participants will be able to:

  • Design a multi-level information architecture for a complex enterprise, distinguishing between taxonomies, thesauri, and ontologies
  • Develop a controlled vocabulary aligned to ISO 25964, including preferred terms, non-preferred terms, and hierarchical, associative, and equivalence relationships
  • Design a digital preservation programme aligned to the OAIS Reference Model (ISO 14721), applying appropriate preservation strategies for different file types and risk profiles
  • Specify PREMIS preservation metadata requirements and design a fixity checking programme for a digital archive
  • Apply DAMA-DMBOK2 principles to govern an enterprise data environment across multiple knowledge areas
  • Design and implement a Master Data Management programme, selecting an appropriate MDM architecture
  • Govern data lineage and manage a data catalogue for enterprise metadata management
  • Design a data quality measurement programme producing metrics across all six quality dimensions
  • Apply knowledge management strategy using the Nonaka SECI model to design knowledge capture, transfer, and retention programmes
  • Design and facilitate communities of practice as organisational knowledge management assets
  • Govern business intelligence and analytics platforms from an information management governance perspective
  • Deliver an IM programme performance report for senior executive audiences

Module 1: Advanced Information Architecture and Ontology Design
1) Information architecture components: organisation, labelling, navigation, and search 2) Taxonomies: hierarchical classification design principles 3) Thesauri: ISO 25964 structure - preferred terms, non-preferred terms, broader/narrower/related relationships 4) Ontologies: semantic knowledge models using OWL and RDF 5) Controlled vocabulary development, governance, and maintenance

Module 2: Digital Preservation and Long-Term Access
1) Digital obsolescence: format, media, hardware, and software obsolescence 2) Preservation strategies: migration, emulation, normalisation, and technology preservation 3) The OAIS Reference Model (ISO 14721): SIP, AIP, DIP, and the six functional entities 4) PREMIS preservation metadata: data dictionary and implementation 5) Fixity checking and integrity management 6) ISO 16363 Trusted Digital Repository certification 7) Digital preservation policy and risk assessment

Module 3: Business Intelligence and Analytics Governance
1) The analytics value chain and IM governance obligations: descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics 2) Master Data Management: registry, consolidation, coexistence, and centralised architectures 3) Golden record design, matching, and deduplication 4) Data lineage: documenting the path from source to consumption 5) The enterprise data catalogue: design, implementation, and governance 6) Business glossary development and stewardship 7) Governing BI platforms and AI/ML data pipelines

Module 4: Advanced Information Risk Management
1) Enterprise-scale information risk assessment using ISO 31000 2) Risk framework design for complex multi-system environments 3) Quantitative and qualitative risk analysis 4) Enterprise information risk register: design and maintenance 5) Integrating information risk into corporate ERM reporting 6) Presenting information risk to boards and audit committees

Module 5: Knowledge Management Systems and Strategy
1) KM strategy: aligning KM to organisational objectives 2) SECI-aligned KM interventions across all four conversion modes 3) Communities of practice lifecycle: seeding, growing, sustaining, and transforming 4) Knowledge audit methodology and knowledge mapping 5) Knowledge elicitation techniques: structured interviews, cognitive task analysis, and story elicitation 6) KM technology strategy: intranets, wikis, AI-powered search, expert directories 7) ISO 30401:2018 implementation and KM value measurement

Module 6: Information Management Programme Governance
1) Designing and governing sustained multi-year IM transformation programmes 2) IM maturity roadmaps: moving from Level 1 through to Level 4 3) IM performance metrics and executive reporting using the Balanced Scorecard 4) Integrating IM programme governance with corporate governance and risk management 5) Building the IM business case for sustained investment
