An expiration date on a professional certification is intended to ensure that the certification continues to represent current professional competence, knowledge, and commitment to professional development rather than simply confirming competence demonstrated at one point in time.
Professional practice evolves continuously. Laws and regulations change, standards are revised, technologies advance, and new professional risks and responsibilities emerge. This is particularly relevant in areas such as Data Protection and Privacy, Data and Information Management, AI Governance, Cybersecurity, Records Management, and Digital Transformation.
For this reason, IIM requires holders of applicable professional certifications to periodically maintain and renew their certification through the prescribed re-certification and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.
Re-certification helps to:
• Maintain the credibility and integrity of the certification.
• Demonstrate that the certified professional remains current in the field.
• Encourage continuous professional development and lifelong learning.
• Ensure continued compliance with applicable professional standards and certification requirements.
• Give employers, clients, regulators, and other stakeholders greater confidence in the continuing competence of certified professionals.It is also important to distinguish between a professional certification and an academic qualification. An academic degree or diploma generally records an educational achievement already attained, whereas professional certification may require ongoing demonstration that the holder continues to satisfy the requirements of the certification scheme.
The validity and re-certification cycle may therefore vary depending on the particular IIM certification and its applicable requirements.
In summary, the expiration date does not diminish the value of your certification; rather, it helps protect its continuing professional value, relevance, credibility, and recognition.
